Product Review
Hartford Products' 9 Foot Flat Car
This kit, the first in a planned series of 7/8n2
scale models of small mining, industrial and logging rolling stock based on 24”
gauge prototypes, is offered as part of a joint effort by Hartford Products,
Inc. and Sierra Valley, Enterprises.
The sturdy carton containing parts neatly packaged in sealed plastic
bags makes an excellent impression when first opened for inspection.
Closer inspection of the parts further emphasizes the first rate quality
of the kit. The castings, of which
there are many, fit together perfectly where necessary and are immaculate,
requiring virtually no clean up. The
wooden components are cleanly and precisely cut. The builder does not have to provide any material other than
paint, adhesives and the usual complement of small tools found on any modeling
bench.
This kit was my first foray into the world of
7/8n2 and it was therefore reassuring to have, with one exception, clear and
very detailed instructions. Because my
knowledge of brake gear was very limited, I had difficulty in understanding how
the brake chain was rigged.
Our editor, Jim Massfeller solved that problem for
me. Apart from the brake chain rigging,
assembly of the kit was straightforward and very satisfying. As you can see from the photo, much effort
went into providing realistic brake gear.
The pedestals are ingeniously designed to provide realistic springing
for the wheel sets and, aided by the many guide holes provided, can be easily
assembled into accurate running gear.
The wood for planking the deck is precut to length, as are all wooden
parts, and is lapped as well.
Noteworthy was the press fit of the wooden side sills into slots in the
end sills, which required nothing more than a touch of ACC to secure the
joints. Link couplers are
provided. Mounting hardware is also
provided if you prefer to supply your own Kadee couplers.
I highly recommend this kit to anyone wishing to
build an accurate, high quality addition to their roster.
