Building the Rangeley

The model is 38 1/4" long by 6" wide by 9" from rail heads to top. It weighs in a 8 1/2 pounds with all the people aboard. A special thanks to Savery at edville@worldnet.att.net for all his help, the drawings and other details. Without that help the car could not have been built.

The right end of car is a smoking room. The blank wall and reflected window are the heating and toilet. The next 8 windows are Parlor and last two windows on the left are bench seats.

The passenger trucks were made from plastic. The springs are from Aristo-Craft and the trucks were assembled with a basswood center spring block which was drilled and tapped for a 6/32 screw.

The Mint & Thyme Short Line is not in a large backyard, therefore curves are tight for such a large car. Body mounted couplers cannot be used. Setting the trucks on a curved piece of track, I used a ruler to find the length needed to keep the coupler centered between the rails. This became the length of the arm, which is free to move independently from the trucks. Now the car can be pushed backwards without pushing the trucks off the rails.

I made up a clay master for barrel type seats and cast enough for the car and mounted them on golf tees inserted into holes drilled in the bottom. I filled the car with passengers and it is now available for use on my railroad.
