Meeting on the Mountain
June is the month for Steve King's Spring Meet in
Rocky Mount, VA. This was the third
year for the gathering of East Coast 7/8"ers and the best so far. Steve is the "father" of Maine
style railroading in 7/8" scale and is producing the 2' Gauge James Wyman
2-6-0 kit, which is long since sold out. One of the highlights of the meet was
a new international record set by Carl Brummer with his version of the James
Wyman by pulling 15 cars as shown in the photo below.
I expect that some of the estate and
industrial guys will say "Big Deal, we pull 50 cars all of the time."
And this is so, but the train above was 45' long and could carry two or three
entire estate or industrial railroads. Although Steve's meets tend to concentrate
on the mainline models, the industrial and estate guys were also well
represented.
Another
highlight was the introduction of the log bunk cars that Steve and Dave Cummins
teamed up to produce. These cars will
soon be offered as kits and fully assembled.
The meet was on Friday and
Saturday and as Friday came to a close, everyone started stacking their
equipment in Steve's garage. This ended
up being the largest collection of 7/8" scale and Maine style equipment
ever assembled as shown in the photo below.
Although our gatherings tend to be small, we all
had fun and learned from examining each other's models. I encourage all who can to plan on attending
Steve's Meet next year. On the
following page are some selected photos of the equipment.
